How I Made A Six Figure Business Online Without Selling Anything

I have just had a meeting with a client who has a product they are looking to promote that is all about how people can make sales in their business. While going over all the possibilities and ways of promoting the product which will help people make sales in their business, it made me realise how lucky I am that I don’t really need this product.

“Selling” in my opinion is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. Offline or online – it’s difficult, and coming from a line of work where the guidelines were, “Sell Or You’ll Be Out Of A Job,” I have developed a selling phobia, and since quitting that job to start my online business, I have seriously never had to apply those same guidelines of ‘selling’ anything since. So it really surprises me how I made it this far to be honest with you!

The kind of selling I used to do, (financial products in a bank) meant that everyone I sold to thought I was trying to hustle them into something, or something out of them. To be honest I was, because I needed my quarterly commission cheque to come through, or I lost my job, clear and simple. I perfected as best I could the “hustle” so I could sell a few more credit cards and loans to people who didn’t really need them, such as students already up to their necks in debt, or old ladies coming in to draw their pension every few weeks.

When I left that job, I decided that selling was something I never wanted to do again, so I had to seriously think how I was going to make my money – since money is generally in exchange for something being sold.

What I decided to do was create a business centred around 3 things:

1)  Something that I really enjoyed doing.
2) That was very useful to other people.
3) That was also profitable.

Then I set to changing my mindset from “Selling” to “Helping,” and I have now been helping entrepreneurs with their online and offline businesses for several years, doing something I really love doing, and in exchange for the help, they pay me, which is pretty cool :-)

As soon as I started genuinely helping people, with something I believed in, and it really worked for them, and because of the level of quality I strive for and dedication I put in, they told other people that I could help them too… and then there was a snowball effect, and people everywhere were asking for my help.

Since I changed my mindset and attitude towards what I actually do on a daily basis, the business has gone from strength to strength. I never sell anything, I make suggestions to people on how the services we provide in my company could help them to achieve their short and long terms goals, and then I leave it for them to decide.

When I know that I am being honest, upfront, and impartial about what I am suggesting, and I know for a fact it will help their business, I never really mind whether they decide to take my advice or not. There are an infinite number of people out there I can help, and I don’t need them all to take me up on my suggestions in order to make a decent income from helping people, but I have to say, a majority of the time, they will make the decision to come back and get the help they need. I think more than anything because I am genuine, and I don’t try and sell them anything at all.

This is why I prefer online business services, where people can see results and change before their eyes, as opposed to selling via affiliate links or blogging where people may never use the product or read the book. Just like the student who may have never been able to pay the loan back, or the old lady who would start using the credit card not fully realising what it was, and before you know it, she is in debt up to her eyeballs. There are loads of products I love out there, and I am happy to share them, but I never solely rely on the sales I make from product recommendations – it’s a bit too erratic, and it’s just not for me.

For anyone thinking that selling is the only way to make a decent income online, it’s time to think — Outside Of The Box ;-)

I am just like you, I am not a salesy type of person and really have to believe that what I am offering the other person is going to help them..if not it just does not work for me.

Selling is tough, I am so glad I don't work in an electrical store, I think they work on the same commission basis – every time I visit one I feel like walking out with a new TV so the kid on the floor can keep his job LOL

I much prefer the mindset of “helping” that is something I am very passionate about .. helping businesses to succeed. Book keeping is a good example it is not something that people love to do but it is so essential to knowing what is happening in your business.

You are so right, and when you are doing something for someone that they know nothing about (or dislike) then it makes a huge difference to their lives.

I like how you boiled it down to 3 simple steps – creating a business around 1) Something you enjoy doing, 2) Something that's useful to other people, and 3) Profitable.

The challenge for me has always been figuring out how to turn what I enjoy doing (reading, learning, researching) into something profitable that helps others. I've done it for several years, but not at the level I'd like. Seems there is something missing from my approach that I haven't quite figured out yet. Getting closer though!

Reading, learning and researching? Sounds like you should be looking to become a VA! :-)

    Hello Michelle,

I'm currently in the process of starting my own business as a VA. I've been employed as a VA for 3 years now and I just LOVE the job. I love the freedom of working from anywhere (home, office, while traveling) and the responsibility that comes with it. Reading your post, a number of things really hit home for me. First, my personal view on sales is very similar to yours. I am a communicator and many times I've been offered a role in sales. However, I've always known I could never sell anything I didn't believe so I never took up any sales role offer.

Secondly, your view on how to build a successful business is pretty much what is on my mind right now: I want to build a business around something I really enjoy doing, that has a positive impact in other people's life/business and of course, that makes money. I'm glad I found your site and I will certainly explore more of your work to get inspired. Thank you. Marta.

Hi Marta, thank for sharing your story! The most successful businesses in my opinion are built around exactly what you mentioned you want to do:

“I want to build a business around something I really enjoy doing, that has a positive impact in other people's life/business and of course, that makes money.”

  • Candys

This is EXACTLY why I like you so much! I'm in exactly the same place in my life, and I really just want to do something I love without that gut wrenching pushy sales pitch.

  • SKG

Fantastic and inspiring thoughts at just the right time for me. Thinking of selling as helping and doing something you love makes so much sense!

Thanks so much for the comment SKG, life is so much less stressful too when you love what you do :-)
