Flyers Are For Rock Concerts. The Reality Of Offline Marketing For Your Virtual Business

I like to keep up with newbie VA’s and I find forums a great place to go to read about the difficulties they are having, I try to create helpful blog posts from personal experience, based on their concerns, problems and overall difficulties they are having when starting out.

I came across a recent thread, basically where a new VA wanted to know how to get clients,  let’s take a look at the context of the question posted on the forum.

“I just wanted to know from other people who have embarked on this path, how did you go about getting your first assignments. Did you post flyers and adverts or did you approach companies directly and arrange a meeting face to face.”

There was also another question…

“I thought I could advertise my services in the local papers (there are two) and also target some of the businesses in the area, maybe go and see them in person. Do you think this is the way to go about it all? “

And here are a handful of responses…

“I would have thought getting hold of the Bar Association or whoever it is who can tell you where the one-man-bands are, then targetting them, or their meeting places, with business cards. Joining the Small Business Federation, the Rotary, the Lionesses, the WI, the Chamber of Commerce.”

“A good business card, a short cover letter and a smart suit goes a long way.”

“Contact your local small businesses, by phone or by calling on them.”

***Just to keep you in the loop, nobody actually addressed the question of how they actually got clients, e.g. “I got a client from doing this,” to me, the responses sounded more like those you get when you are looking for traditional employment.

Now first, let me tell you something, I don’t do offline networking, I dabbled in it early on when I didn’t know any better and got nothing from it. I did business cards, flyers, local adverts, newspapers and magazines, it was costly and got me nowhere. When I was printing my flyers  I felt like I was putting myself in the ball park of a rock band trying to sell tickets to a concert, or advertising special offers on washing powder for the local supermarket… It just didn’t feel right to me as a virtual business owner, perhaps sending out the wrong message. After 3 weeks I decided that the only way to get online clients was online, and I gave up the offline networking entirely, as there was clearly a flaw, the offline local businesses were simply not ready for the virtual concept of hiring, they were sceptical, untrusting, closed-minded and couldn’t really grasp how it was possible – and to be frank, I didn’t want to waste anymore time, money and effort educating the offline business community. I started seeking clients online, and within a week, I was hired.

All the clients in VMF have come from sitting in my home office behind my computer. So I cannot say whether the suggestions on the forum will work, but from my own personal experience, they don’t. My advice is that if you try it for a month and if you don’t get a result, move on because it’s not a good return on investment.

Time for a wake up call.

Okay, so moving back to the forum thread, I was reading the responses, I was seeing a pattern emerging, that not a single person had suggested to this newbie VA any form of online networking, the fact is, the virtual world has literally millions of potential clients, and you can reach a much wider audience, in a very small amount of time, from the comfort of your own desk chair — doesn’t that sound better than wasting money on printing, time on getting all dressed up and introducing yourself to people like a door-to-door salesman, all to reach no more than a few hundred local businesses, who may have never even heard of a virtual assistant, let alone be ready and willing to hire one. The entrepreneurs hanging out on the Internet are actually searching for virtual assistants, they know what they are, they understand the benefits, they may have even already been working with them, the online market is primed and ready for you to make your entrance.

When you are creating your marketing plan, or client strategy, do whatever you feel is going to work for you, the best thing to always do is try what you think will work, then learn from experience, but keep in mind that the offline world is not as receptive as the online world, and no matter what your previous vocation, from a legal secretary to a marketing assistant, looking for your potential clients online, and sending an email is far easier, and far more likely to get a response than walking around the streets with flyers and business cards.

On a final note, I am not saying at all that it’s not possible to obtain clients offline, I am saying that the online world is quicker, easier, cheaper and infinitely more convenient!

I would love to hear actual success stories from VA’s who have found quality clients purely from offline networking, leave your story in the comments below!

Hi Michelle – I totally agree with you – Offline is best. When I was first starting out, I asked similar questions on forums and guess what….I received almost the same answers. Again, no one actually confirmed that it was successful.

I decided not to try off line networking. I live really (really) remote and no one here has ever heard of VA’s before so it is hard work! I gave up being an employee so that I could have my independence as a business owner (on line) and this is the direction I am taking with regards to marketing.

There are so many resources out there, Social Media to name but one. Lots of opportunities, you just need to spend a little time researching and visiting top quality blogs like http://www.virtualassistant-live.com for honest, truthful advice.

I have found a few leads through Social Media and will continue on with that, along with blogging and newsletters.

    ON LINE IS BEST :)

Lol, do you mean you agree online is best :-)

Thanks Martha, it's great News that you are finding clients through social media, as you know that's one of my top resources! Keep it up and business will continue to grow.

That was the route the old SS took, recommended by people on forums, it took me nowhere and reduced my bank balance far too much!

    Hello Michelle,

I came across your blog post by pure chance and I have to tell you that I agree with you. I am in online business now since 2 and 1/2 years and business is going great. All my clients come from online marketing.
When I started out, I had the same questions. I looked in forums and I found a lot of those answers as well. I made business cards, brochures and flyers. I did not get any clients from those. I think they are handy to have and there are situations, where I need them, but they are not my primary form of marketing. I got my first client from commenting on blogs. I still get some of my clients like that. It is a very easy, very fast way to get out and be seen – perfect for newbies. So, my advice is to find blogs with topics that your target audience is interested in and write a nice juice comment. By the way, your blog does not target my target audience, but I really liked it and wanted to give you my opinion on the topic.

      Hi Wendy,
Thanks so much for stopping by on the blog to share your story.
I agree entirely that blog commenting is a great way for putting yourself out there to be found, and it can be very effective not only in obtaining clients, but for general publicity and potential projects for your business, such as guest posting or JV opportunities :)

Michelle, your insight on various topics is always on point. It does seem silly to me to pass out flyers or go door-to-door to build up a virtual business. As VAs our efforts should be to market online to attract clients since our business is 'virtual'. As you said, the clients are out there searching online for us. So it's best to work on being positioned online to attract them via your website, online business directory, social networks, etc.

    • http://virtualassistant-live.com/ Michelle, Virtual Miss Friday

Thanks so much Lisa, excellent points!. I once saw on a VA forum/website where someone was recommending VA's go out and have door hangers printed up – still to this day, for the life of me I cannot fathom out how door hangers would be of any use to my business!

  • Sharon Savage

I totally agree Michelle. I tried to do the offline marketing when I first started out as a VA, and that got me absolutely nothing, except put a dent in my checking account. I finally stopped trying to market offline and market online and it was like someone flipped a switch and all of a sudden I had people contacting me! That was a great day for me!

    • http://virtualassistant-live.com/ Michelle, Virtual Miss Friday

Hi Sharon, it was entirely the same for me, and I could kick myself for not realising it before spending money on marketing materials, but that's what it's all about, experience and learning, and once I realised my mistake, I never made it again. Marketing online is the most sensible choice for any VA.
Thanks so much for the comment Sharon!

My business is still fairly new, but I have found that my offline marketing attempts have continually reached a dead end. I thought I should be specific with my online attempts in order to help other newbies:) I have had GREAT success with networking on places like Twitter and Facebook. I subscribe to virtual assistant directories and read and comment on relevant blogs. However, I'm always eager to hear of other ways people have been successful with online marketing.

    • http://virtualassistant-live.com/ Michelle, Virtual Miss Friday

Hi Alicia, thanks so much for sharing your experience! When I started, social networking was just coming on the scene, and now it has totally exploded. There has never been a better time to go virtual, with so many tools and systems available, most of them free, it's become so much easier to get clients than it was just a few years ago.

  • http://www.admin-angels.com.au Barb

I've had a slightly different experience. I decided to join my local chamber of commerce and took over doing their secretarial work. While I haven't got any actual jobs out of the group, it has certainly made it worth my while, and I also love talking to people face to face. My client base is split, half have found me on-line and the other half I've met with or are referrals. I do tend to do some on-site work too, so I'm not completely “virtual”.

    • http://virtualassistant-live.com/ Michelle, Virtual Miss Friday

Hi Barb, I am so delighted that you have found some connections through the chamber of commerce, I would love to hear if any of those connections turn into paid virtual assistant work in the future!
On-site work is more of a mobile assistant, which some clients will often prefer over virtual, it's great that you can be flexible in regard to this, as long as the mobile work is on your terms, and you are happy to leave the virtual world during those times you are visiting clients, that's really all that matters, it's your business and your boundaries ;-)
Thanks so much for this valuable comment Barb!

  • Susan

I found this article worthwhile. I am preparing to be a VA, and am educating myself on the best methods of marketing that will work for me. I agree, printing and mailers seem so expensive. I just need to learn more about social media!~

    • http://virtualassistant-live.com/ Michelle, Virtual Miss Friday

Hi Susan, I am really pleased you found this helpful, social media is an amazing way to connect with people, most definitely top my list for marketing, plus it's good fun too and doesn't feel at all like work which is a bonus! Thanks so much for your comment :-)

  • Semgems

I live in Fl and do SEM for a retail B/M in San Diego, CA. In addition to online efforts, they have an IO with a “Home Maintenance/Upgrades” direct mail magazine. They also had a local radio station onsite promoting the grand opening of their new location last year. Other than that, it's ALL been ppc and social media. Although most overall sales are generated from ONline efforts – the ROI from print is higher (comparing ratio of each). Sounds crazy but it's true :) Thanks for this article.

    • http://virtualassistant-live.com/ Michelle, Virtual Miss Friday

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, I hope all is well in San Diego! It sounds like the work you do is for an offline company, because you mentioned a location. I do completely see how offline marketing benefits an offline business as well as online marketing :-)

Very interesting insight regarding the ROI, excellent comment, thank you!

I found this interesting article. I am studying to be a VA and I’m raising on the best marketing methods that work for me. I agree, printing and direct mail seems so expensive. I have only to learn about social media! ~

Thank you. I am a new VA and have been so frustrated with marketing.  jackie@thehelpingtree.org

    • http://virtualassistant-live.com/ Michelle Dale

You’re welcome Jackie, it is a little frustrating, the best solution is trial and error, make a list of what works and what doesn’t then focus your time on what works – and I have usually found it to be that what works, id generally what I really enjoy doing the most – hop this helps! Thanks so much for the comment.
