5 Reasons Why Being An Independent Virtual Assistant Could Make You Miserable

I have been having a bit of an odd time recently with something, I guess I couldn’t get my head around it, but can understand it at the same time.  I had one of the VA’s who works as a part of my team tell me they have decided that being a virtual assistant just isn’t for them, and they have decided to go back to traditional employment. This VA was amazing at her job, there is no way I would have ever considered not using her skills and services in my business, and she is very talented, and could of easily expanded her business in the future. This was honestly the first time I have ever heard of a VA wanting to go back to employment because they simply didn’t like being a VA, and missed being employed and having a boss – I was really quite shocked…

I noticed there were certain things that came up which could be inherent in someone’s character which would mean if they were considering becoming a VA, it may well be worth considering these points to see if they really are going to be able to handle it. Being a VA is about priorities, what some people see as priorities in their life, may simply not fit under the VA umbrella, which could mean it might be a bad choice of career.

1. You’re self-employed

First off, if you are an independent business owner, you are self-employed, and responsible for your own business, you won’t get holiday pay (I used to think what is the point of holiday pay when you are only allowed to go on holiday 4 weeks a year…), sick pay (how often do you get sick, and is your sickness mostly related to job stress anyway?) or any other employee perks that come with a traditional job, essentially you are on your own, and will need to factor these things into your life. If you like the security blanket of employment, you will find transitioning to being a business owner worrying. This is why a multi-VA business model is essential for me, because I still want the business to turn over and an income to come in even when I am not able to work.

2. You’re responsible for your schedule

You have to be highly self-motivated and able to schedule in your work time and your life, if you are not able to manage your time effectively, or able to make that balance, and you need someone else to do that for you, or you need to physically be away from home in order to be able to work, then working from home as a VA will not suit you.

3. You will need to love your own company

Whilst VA’s can work from all sorts of places, really anywhere with Internet access, we tend to spend most of our time at home, and sometimes this can get lonely, even with the interaction of a virtual team, or connections on social media, you are essentially working solo, and this is likely to become depressing for social butterflies who need a good deal of human interaction on a daily basis.

4. You don’t want any kind of hassle

If you don’t work well under pressure, then being a business owner full stop won’t be right for you. Being a business owner means you need your wits about you, you will have to deal with challenges, face problems, troubleshoot and take responsibility. Whilst as you gain more experience and become more used to your work, this can become much easier in time, but the responsibility of your business will always rest on your shoulders. If you slack off, don’t show up, miss deadlines or don’t feel like meeting commitments, you will lose clients, and as a result, lose your income.

5. You like the “system”

To be honest with you, the way the economy changes no job is safe these days, but being employed and working under a contractual agreement for an employer, which includes redundancy money, company pension, dental care, or some sort of traditional employment contract will provide you with the feeling of stability and security, that working with clients on an independent basis won’t provide you with.

The Office ;)

To me being a virtual assistant has been one of the biggest blessings in my life, there is no way I could ever go back to working for “the man,” having to answer to someone else, have people tell me where I need to be, when I need to be there. I want to make these decisions for myself, because I want to do something, rather than because I have to. I love the freedom of not being tied down to one location, or one set of working hours. I also like the security that being a VA provides me with of having the ability to take my business with me wherever I choose, controlling my destiny. For me, being a VA is ‘being free.’

But for some, I have learned that the idea of this kind of lifestyle can often be very different from the reality of what they need in their daily life, and if such is the case it may just not suit you. It might later on in life perhaps, but being a VA is something you really need to feel ready for — it’s a high dive, a plunge, a risk, think wisely before making that leap from traditional employment, to working for yourself and being your own boss.

Have you considered that being a VA may not be wise for you?

A really good post, especially for those about to start their route along the Virtual Assistant path.
In one way I’m lucky, hubby (!) works from home 5 days a week so I’m never alone, and with the others on the TVAA/TVAP courses theres always somewhere to go if you’ve got a problem or a piece of good news, or even just to chat!

I am with my hubby too, and we share the responsibilities of daily life which is nice. Plus he works in my biz which I am ever grateful for! I love all the people in the network we have created in TVAA and TVAP – It does make life more interesting having people around you online, even if it is virtual! Thanks for the comment Jo ;)

Another inspiring post Michelle, which has just given me inspiration to write a personal blog post myself about my journey to become a virtual assistant.

I am so sorry for your loss (that sounds awful lol), but nevertheless you have the most amazing team behind you and I know that who ever it is that is leaving your team will have made the right decision for them.

Over the past 8 months or so, I have come to know a number of your team members and they are all amazing people with awesome talents. I would like to wish (who ever it is), all the very best in their future employment and I’m very sure we’ll all keep in touch via the usual channels.

    I feel a tear coming on ;)

    All the best
    Martha xoxo

Wow, can’t wait to read the blog post – make sure you reply me on that one ;) The VA is more behind the scenes, although she has commented a couple of times in the TVAA site. She will be missed, but also I think everything happens for a reason, so we’ll see what this reason is as time unfolds! Thanks for the comment Martha :)

The post will be out tomorrow. I have mentioned you Michelle as you are now a big part of my business life and my inspiration.

Brilliant post Michelle and having looked at all the points I can honestly say hand on heart that really none apply to me phew!!

Having been self employed now for getting near to 10 years I cannot think of anything worst that going back into “the system” I don’t like it, never have done and love to tread my own path lol.Yes there are times especially when starting out, that I have momentarily considered whether being a VA is for me, but these are fleeting moments that I think most people have when working within their own businesses.  Yes sometimes it’s lonely but as a positive it enables focus.I LOVE LOVE LOVE Coffee Not Included with all my heart and get a real buzz out of solving peoples problems and helping them achieve :-) You and your team are absolutely the best Michelle and although I’m very sorry to hear that this particular person has decided it’s not for them, I’m sure it is the right decision for them and wish them all the very best for the future.

I hate the system too – not for me, and in fact we move so much that we would never be anywhere long enough to be a part of a system lol. Thanks so much for your comments Tracy, I love CNI too!! as I  do all the TVAA sites, its all about what works best in our own lives, and as long as everyone is doing what makes them happy, then the world will be a better place. :)

    Great post Michelle,

It’s hard for a lot of us to imagine going back to a 9 – 5 job and dealing with all the politics that comes along with it, but the virtual lifestyle isn’t for everyone.  You are working on your own most of the time and although you may be speaking with clients and other VA’s, they are not sitting next to you.  You have to be very disciplined and this has to be a dream of yours.  I can’t imagine ever working for someone else again and I don’t plan on ever having to!

I wish your VA all the best, I think she made an incredibly brave decision and I wish her all the best.

@ Martha – a personal blog on top of all that you do!  Michelle, I’m starting to get really worried about Martha, I don’t think she sleeps ever!

    • http://www.marthassos.com/ Martha’s SOS

Thanks Grainne – I didn’t mean an actual blog lol, I meant just a little personal post ;)

      Seriously, I wouldn’t have time – Although…Watch this space ;)

Oh, I do sleep but generally between 1 & 7 am only.

      • http://virtualassistant-live.com/ Michelle Dale

lol, my cut off is midnight these days, getting old ;)

        • http://www.marthassos.com/ Martha’s SOS

Oh my, 30 mins left for you then ;)

          • http://virtualassistant-live.com/ Michelle Dale

I knocked off early last night lol

    • http://virtualassistant-live.com/ Michelle Dale

Thanks Grainne, I totally relate to this comment, I would really resent having a boss these days, been on my own for too long. The VA still is unsure about the direction she is heading, and may even go for a complete career change and retrain, but either way, I wish her the best too :) Thanks so much for your comment!

Interesting… Yes, I agree that being a virtual assistant may not be for everybody. This is especially true for those who don’t mind having a boss, is more of an extrovert and wants the security of a guaranteed paycheck every 2 weeks or every month.

I myself have reflected about the pros and cons of being a VA versus having a day job. I may not be “there” yet but I know I don’t want the same pressure that I get when I’m in an office setting – the difficult boss, moody coworkers. I especially hate office politics, don’t like being glared at for taking a sick leave, not being able to get the desired month I want my vacation to be because my coworker beat me to it, and the list goes on…

So, I have decided to become a virtual assistant and will stick with that decision no matter what. ;)

    • http://virtualassistant-live.com/ Michelle Dale

I totally relate to the office politics thing Emmylou, especially when people took early lunches, extended breaks, or half days, then everyone would be gossiping about it. Good luck in in your VA business, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do ;)

Thanks so much, Michelle! Still interested about TVAA but I’m currently saving up for my church wedding in December in The Philippines. I’m not sure when I can next year but I’m determined to finish what I’ve started in TVAA.

Thanks so much for providing great articles :D

        • http://virtualassistant-live.com/ Michelle Dale

Wow are you getting married – congratulations!! Very happy for you, really looking forward to having you back with us ;)

          • Emmylou Sagusay Henderson

Yeah, I’m married here in court but coming from a strict Catholic background really calls for a church wedding, so my husband and I will get married for the second time in church… Thanks, Michelle!:D I already learned in module 2… it’s kinda incomplete not learning everything and honestly, I’m having a “VA identity crisis” right now.

          • http://virtualassistant-live.com/ Michelle Dale

When you come back we’ll get you back on track ;) Have an awesome wedding Emmylou!

Thanks so much for the comment. It does help a lot having a community around you online, and it was really my intention to bring together and help like-minded people through the blog and the membership sites which I offer. The support network at VA-Live is amazing, we all help eachother and we all motivate eachother, it’s really great :)

Hi Hena, It sounds like you would be more suited to becoming a mobile assistant and perhaps working with local clients, perhaps do a combination of the two, so you can still essentially set up your business from home, but also regularly get out to meet clients. Working virtually and understanding clients and tasks online is something that can be learnt, especially through a good training programme. The most important thing is that you are happy, so you can wake up in the morning and be raring to go on your business! Finding a balance between mobile and virtual I think would be a great start :)
